We were wrong to think that we had seen the last of the celebrations commemorating the recent birth of Princess Charlotte as the Royal Mint have recently unveiled a commemorative £5 coin. The Queen, The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Chancellor of the Exchequer, George Osborne, have given their own seal of approval to the Royal Mint to produce 500 gold coins as well as 9500 silver coins.
The Royal Mint have unveiled a commemorative £5 coin celebrating the birth of Princess Charlotte, daughter of The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.
The coins were produced to celebrate the arrival of Princess Charlotte of Cambridge, who was born at St Mary’s Hospital in Paddington on Saturday . The coin was designed by John Bergdahl, the same artist who designed the commemorative coins for the birth of Charlotte’s elder brother, Prince George, in July 2013.
Shane Bissett from the Royal Mint spoke of the new £5 coins, “It is only fitting that we commemorate the new addition to The Royal Family with the release of a special coin, just as we celebrated the arrival of Prince George.”
Over its 1100 year history, the Royal Mint has evolved to become a sophisticated industrial concern operating today as a government company. The Royal Mint Museum hosts a vast collection of British coins that have been produced for almost every major occasion in the country. Some of the most popular coins include Her Majesty’s Coronation back in 1953 to Prince Charles’s 50th Birthday in 1998 and the death of Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother in 2002.
As for this special occasion, babies born on the same day as Princess Charlotte are eligible to receive a special silver penny from the Royal Mint. Parents of babies born on May 2nd must register their details on the Royal Mint Facebook page to be in with a chance of receiving one of the 2015 special pennies. The first silver penny was presented to new parents Chantel and Miguel Abel whose daughter Sofia arrived at the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital just three hours after the birth of the Princess.
It was revealed on Monday that the second child of The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge was to be named Princess Charlotte Elizabeth Diana, a name with connections to many members and previous members of The Royal Family. The birth was officially registered on Tuesday before Her Majesty The Queen paid a visit to Kensington Palace to meet her fifth great-grandchild for the first time.
As well as the Royal Mint’s commemorative coin, the Royal Mail has also issued a postmark that will appear on letters across the UK on Tuesday, the first in its 500-year history. The postmark will read, “Congratulations TRH The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge on the birth of their daughter.”
