Prince William will now join the ranks of The Duke of Kent, HRH The Prince of Wales, Captain Mark Phillips(Princess Anne’s ex-husband), HRH The Duke of York, HRH The Earl of Wessex and Vice Admiral Sir Timothy Laurence (Princess Anne’s current husband).
An aide-de-camp is a personal appointment from The Queen and is made only to those in the Royal Family holding a military rank. Prince William is Colonel of the Irish Guards, an appointment also made by The Queen to the 2nd-in-line in 2011, just before his wedding. In fact, Prince William wore the uniform as Colonel of the Irish Guards for his wedding.
This is just another in a string of high ranking appointments for the 30-year-old Duke of Cambridge who is also a knight of the Order of the Garter and the Order of the Thistle, the two highest ranking orders of chivalry in the land.
Prince William will now have a new title affixed to his existing full title. His title, in full, now will be: “His Royal Highness Prince William Arthur Philip Louis, Duke of Cambridge, Earl of Strathearn, Baron Carrickfergus, Royal Knight Companion of the Most Noble Order of the Garter, Knight of the Most Ancient and Most Noble Order of the Thistle, Aide-de-Camp to Her Majesty”.
Aides-de-Camp have no regular function other than to assist Her Majesty where requiring. Other ‘ADCs’ as they’re known, are appointed from the Armed Forces.
News of this appointment appeared in today’s court circular as, “The Queen has been pleased to appoint The Duke of Cambridge as a personal Aide-de-Camp to Her Majesty”. This appointment takes effect from today.
