A girl Prince William saved last year after she was swept out to sea has had the chance to thank the search-and-rescue pilot.

The Duke of Cambridge was attending the annual Anglesey Show on Wednesday, when he met Sharon West who was saved by the royal pilot and his RAF team last year when she came into difficulty in the sea.

“I just want to thank you for rescuing me last year,” Sharon, 25, told the Prince who was attending his first official engagement since becoming a father to Prince George.

The Prince seemed to recognise the young girl and replied: “Was it you on the beach, you and your sister? How are you, are you all right?”, which prompted the rescued girl to tell the new father “Thank you.”

“No, not at all,” William quickly responded. “I’m glad you made a full recovery. A lot of the time you never meet up with anyone you’ve done it.”

The Duke also made sure the young girl knew that it was a team effort and explained it was one of their fastest jobs.

“It’s a team thing. It was about 38 seconds, I think, it was the fastest ever one we’ve done, it’s a good job it was,” the Prince said. “It was very nice to meet you.”

The teenager later told Channel 5 news that she had been hoping to meet the Prince to express her appreciation.

“He saved my life, and Squadron 22 as well, all of them together,” Sharon told the station. “I wanted to meet him to say thank you.”
