Prince William interviewed by Gary Lineker ahead of FA Cup final

Prince William has been interviewed by the BBC’s Gary Lineker ahead of tomorrow’s FA Cup final between Arsenal and Aston Villa as the Duke prepares to present the trophy to the winning team. In the interview, broadcast tomorrow during the Match of the Day broadcast for the final, the Duke talks about how he became a Villa fan as well as the kind of things he’d like to see happen in English football.

The interview is Prince William’s first since the birth of Princess Charlotte, explaining during the clip that he hopes to be able to take George to see Aston Villa play in the future.

William explains his support for Villa, saying that he “wanted to have a team that was more middle of the table” and that could give him “the more emotional rollercoaster moments” which William said the top-draw clubs such as Manchester United and Chelsea couldn’t.

Filmed at Kensington Palace, the Duke of Cambridge also takes time to express his desire to see more support for young talent to be nurtured for league teams and also the national team.

Speaking of the interview, Lineker said, “it was fascinating to spend some time with The Duke of Cambridge and hear more about his passion for the game. He is genuinely excited about the Cup Final and it’s great that we can showcase his enthusiasm for Villa to the Match of the Day audience.”

The full interview will be broadcast during the BBC’s FA Cup coverage tomorrow around 5pm, leading up to kick-off at 5.30.

William has been president of the FA (Britain’s governing body for association football) since 2006, having taken over from his uncle the Duke of York and following in the footsteps of the Duke of Edinburgh, Duke of Gloucester and also the Duke of Kent.

To see the full interview, tune into the BBC’s live FA Cup Final coverage from 12.10pm this Saturday on BBC One.
