The Duchess of Cambridge gives birth to a daughter

The Duchess of Cambridge has given birth to a baby girl.  The baby was born at 08:34am at the Lindo Wing of St Mary’s Hospital in Paddington and weighed 8lbs and 3 oz.

The Duchess of Cambridge was admitted to hospital just after 6am this morning in the early stages of labour. The Duke of Cambridge was at her side as she gave birth to their daughter. The Duchess and her baby are both doing well, the Palace say.

In a statement released just after 11am, Kensington Palace said that The Queen, The Duke of Edinburgh, The Prince of Wales, The Duchess of Cornwall and Prince Harry as well as other members of both families have been informed and ‘are delighted with the news’.

The baby’s names haven’t been revealed yet, though the Palace say they’ll be announced ‘in due course’. The new princess is fourth in line to the throne and will be known as Her Royal Highness Princess ‘x’ of Cambridge.

The baby is a little sister for Prince George of Cambridge and a second grandchild for The Prince of Wales. The new princessis also The Queen’s fifth great grandchild and her fourth great granddaughter.

The announcement from the Palace noted the medical staff in support were: Guy Thorpe-Beeston (Surgeon Gynaecologist to The Royal Household), Alan Farthing (Surgeon Gynaecologist to HM The Queen), Dr Sunit Godambe (Consultant Neonatologist at Imperial College NHS Trust) and Professor Huw Thomas (Physician to HM The Queen and Head of the Medical Household).

An announcement will be posted on the Buckingham Palace forecourt at around 12.30, using the same easel as for the birth of Prince George back in 2013.

The occasion will also be marked with gun salutes across the country including at Hyde Park and at the Tower of London soon.

Early suggestions say the new royal baby girl and the couple could be released from hospital later today.
