<![CDATA[The Duchess of Cambridge has become Royal Patron of The 1851 Trust, Kensington Palace have announced today.
The announcement marks The Duchess's eighth patronage and reflects her personal interests in sailing and helping young people to build their skills and confidence in various fields.
Launched this morning in Portsmouth by Ben Ainslie, The 1851 Trust is the charitable arm of the British challenger's bid to bring the America's Cup back to Britain. The Duchess was scheduled to attend the announcement event but had to cancel last Tuesday due to her ongoing suffering with Hyperemesis Gravidarum.
Speaking of her new appointment, Kensington Palace released a statement from The Duchess which reads:
“I am delighted to be Royal Patron of The 1851 Trust. I feel very fortunate to have enjoyed sailing from a young age and I know it is a great way of providing young people with the opportunity to develop skills and confidence.
“It is a hugely exciting time for sailing as the British challenger bids to bring the America’s Cup back to Britain. I am looking forward to being part of this journey and I hope that through the 1851 Trust we can engage and inspire a new generation into sailing along the way.”
The Trust is supported by Ben Ainslie Racing, the team which brought the America’s Cup back to Britain, and will work with people under 25 across a diverse range of backgrounds to engage the new generation in sailing and the marine industry, providing young people with the skills needed to protect and conserve the marine environment along with the education and training to innovate in the industry.
The Duchess of Cambridge is an occasional volunteer within the Scouts Association and holds seven other patronages:
- Patron of Action on Addiction
- Royal Patron of East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices
- Royal Patron of The Art Room
- Patron of the National Portrait Gallery, London
- Patron of Place2Be
- Patron of SportsAid
- Patron of The Natural History Museum.
