Baby princess named Charlotte Elizabeth Diana, Palace announce

The baby daughter of The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge has been named Charlotte Elizabeth Diana, Kensington Palace have announced. She’ll be known as Princess Charlotte of Cambridge.

The names came just two days after the baby’s birth on Saturday morning in London.

The baby girl was born at 08:34am in the Lindo Wing of St Mary’s Hospital in Paddington after Kate was admitted there just after 6am in the early stages of labour.

The princess’s birth was announced in a press release and on the Kensington Palace Twitter account just after 11am, and the traditional announcement was placed on a gold easel outside Buckingham Palace at 12.30pm.

Princess Charlotte follows her brother Prince George in the line of succession now – placed fourth. Thanks to a letters patent by The Queen back in 2012, all children of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge will now carry the title of Prince or Princess. Had it not been for this, Charlotte would have taken the title of ‘Lady’.

The new Princess Charlotte Elizabeth Diana shares her names with Queen Charlotte, King George III’s wife, her great grandmother, The Queen and of course her deceased grandmother, Diana, Princess of Wales.

One day, after Prince William has acceded as King, it is expected the princess will be given the title of Princess Royal, currently held by Princess Anne, which is usually afforded to the eldest daughter of the Sovereign.

In 2013, Prince George’s names were also announced two days after the birth, George was also given three names – his full name is George Alexander Louis.

The favourite name for a daughter, before the announcement, was Alice who had been at 5/4 while Elizabeth had been at 5/1 and Charlotte at 6/1.

The next stage for Princess Charlotte will be for her parents to register her birth. Prince George’s birth was registered around two weeks after his birth.
