She’s had the run of queens regnant for centuries, but Anne is finally getting her moment in the spotlight. ‘The Favourite’, the film telling the story of the court of the last Stuart monarch, has been nominated for a host of Golden Globe awards, the first major prizes of the US movie season.
Olivia Colman, who plays Queen Anne in the dark comedy, is up for the best actress award in the musical/comedy category. She’s up against another popular British star, Emily Blunt, who has got a nod for her role as Mary Poppins.
‘The Favourite’ is all about the rivalry between two women to rule Queen Anne and so control power and politics at her court, and both the stars playing her would be conquerors are nominated in the Best Supporting Actress category at the Golden Globes. Emma Stone, who plays Abigail Hill, goes head to head with Rachel Weisz who portrays Sarah, Duchess of Marlborough in the movie.
All three women are no strangers to Golden Globe success. At the 2016 awards, Olivia Colman won Best Supporting Actress in a TV Series for her part in the BBC One series ‘The Night Manager’. Emma Stone won Best Actress in 2017 for her part in ‘La La Land’ while Rachel Weisz scooped Best Supporting Actress in a Film in 2006 for ‘The Constant Gardener’.
Other nominations for ‘The Favourite’ include a nod for Best Screenplay (penned by Deborah Davis and Tony McNamara) and a tilt at ‘Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy’ where it’s up against Mary Poppins Returns and the summer smash, Crazy Rich Asians.
The Golden Globes are usually seen as a good indicator of the movies and stars who will enjoy Oscar success in the months to come and nominations for these prizes mean we could well see the story of Queen Anne’s court nominated for Academy Awards in the early part of 2019. ‘The Favourite’ has already won a number of other prizes including a record-breaking number of British Independent Film Awards and the Grand Jury Prize at the Venice Film Festival where Olivia Colman was also honoured as Best Actress for her role as Anne.
The Golden Globes will be handed out on January 6th 2019.
