On this coming Thursday, 19 November, Her Majesty The Queen joined by His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh will visit Birmingham.
The duo will be arriving by Royal Train into Birmingham New Street Station, which has recently reopened after undergoing an extensive redevelopment. They will tour the new facility and The Queen will meet with staff members and apprentices who were part of the construction project.
The five-year renovation now allows for a larger passenger concourse for the 170,000 travellers who use the station each day. It also includes better entrances, facilities and platforms, as well as the 450,000 square feet of retail space.
Queen Elizabeth will also take part in a brief ceremony to unveil a plaque to officially reopen Birmingham New Street Station.
After leaving the station, The Queen and Prince Philip will take a pause at the Pals War Memorial commemorating railwaymen who died during WWI. The railwaymen served in the Birmingham Pals: three infantry battalions of the Royal Warwickshire Regiment of the British Army started by men volunteering in the City in September of 1914. They will also take part in a dedication and wreath-laying ceremony.
Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip will continue onto the Midland Metro Extension at Bull Street in the city centre. Currently carrying upwards of 5 million passengers throughout Birmingham, the expansion will see four new stops and the addition of 21 zer0-emission trams. Work on the route is almost near completion and Her Majesty will name and board one of the new trams.
To complete their day, they will join in the official opening of the new Birmingham Dental Hospital and School of Dentistry. The hospital and school are run in partnership between the University of Birmingham and Birmingham Community Healthcare NHS Trust.
They will tour the new facility, speaking with management, teaching staff, students and members of the clinical team.
The Queen will unveil a plaque to mark the opening of the site, then attend a lunch with representatives of the hospital and school, as well as those who were part of the creation of the new facility.
Since 1970, Birmingham Dental Hospital and School of Dentistry were the first integrated dental hospital and school. There are only 9 other hospitals in England like Birmingham Dental Hospital. They are able to treat over 120,00 patients each year with about 430 NHS Trust staff and space for upwards of 600 students.
The site was previously home to the BBC’s Pebble Mill Studios between 1971 and 2004.
