It’s hard to believe that Prince George is turning five today! To celebrate, let’s look back at five of our favourite Prince George moments.
- Prince George’s First Public Appearance – July 23, 2013
It was the door watched ‘round the world, and I mean that literally. There were live streams of the front doors to the Lindo Wing at St Mary’s Hospital for an entire month as the world waited for the Duchess of Cambridge to go into labour and come out with a baby nestled in her arms.
Though we had to wait a day after his birth before our first official glimpse of the young (nameless) prince, seeing his jubilant parents stepping out with Prince George was a historic moment. He even gave us a royal wave!
Okay, he was probably startled by the noise and making his displeasure known, but you can’t deny it wasn’t an adorable moment all the same.
- Visiting a Bilby in Sydney, Australia – April 20, 2014
Prince George was a sensation during his first official tour to Australia and New Zealand in 2014.
Near the end of the three-week-long tour, while the Cambridges were touring the Taronga Zoo in Sydney, they opened the bilby enclosure that had been named in George’s honour. The young prince was held up against the enclosure so that he could meet the bilby – also named George – and watch it as a zookeeper gave it water.
Afterwards, as he was being held by his father, a zoo official presented Kate with a stuffed bilby toy as a gift for George. She handed it to George, and he immediately tossed it to the ground, causing the gathered crowd to laugh at him.
- Meeting His Newborn Sister – May 2, 2015
When Princess Charlotte was born on 2 May 2015, we were treated to another Prince George appearance. Prince William drove home to Kensington Palace to pick up his toddler son.
When they arrived back at the Lindo Wing, Prince George was so overwhelmed by the crowds that he immediately gestured for his father to pick him up, then gave a shy wave all the way up to the steps before going inside to see his newborn sister for the first time.
- Visiting the Royal International Air Tattoo – July 8, 2016
Prince George, who by all accounts is obsessed with aeroplanes, helicopters and other flying machines, was probably very excited when he found out that he’d be accompanying his parents to the Royal International Air Tattoo on 8 July 2016.
We got to see the youngster bounce around, overjoyed at the sight of so many aeroplanes, while his parents dashed around with him. His love of aircraft has been spoken about a lot by his parents, and we’ve seen it in action, too.
Upon arriving in Canada in 2016, he appeared more interested in the helicopter flying behind the airport than in greeting the dignitaries; and in Germany in 2017, he got to explore a helicopter before departing.
- Meeting the Obamas – April 22, 2016
How many people can meet heads of state in their pyjamas and not get taken to task for it? At least one: Prince George. When President Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama stopped by Kensington Palace for dinner with Prince William and Kate and Prince Harry in 2016, we were treated to photos from inside showing George casually shaking hands with then-President Obama in his jammies and monogrammed bathrobe. In another, he’s sitting on a rocking horse while the adults proudly watch.
It was such an iconic moment that even President Obama joked about it during his last White House Correspondents’ Dinner speech. “Even some foreign leaders they have been looking ahead, anticipating my departure. Last week Prince George showed up to our meeting in his bathrobe. That was a slap in the face. A clear breach of protocol.”
