Monarchy Monday: A review of the birth of Prince George

Baby Cambridge number two is just around the corner, and I am (as I am sure many, many others) are waiting on pins and needles. There is something about a royal birth that brings people together, not only in the United Kingdom but across the globe.

All across the Commonwealth nations people celebrated the birth of the future King. However, that was almost two years ago, so let’s review the birth of Prince George just to remind us what may be in store this time around.14323799576_122a53cf2c_b

Upon the birth of Prince George on 22nd July 2013, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge broke with tradition. Past births were announced on an easel in front of Buckingham Palace. When Prince George was born, the Kensington Palace Press Office issued a press release first notifying the world that “The Duchess of Cambridge had been safely delivered of a son.” Their Royal Highnesses’ official website and all Royal social media channels also delivered the news. This time around you can expect the Cambridge’s to follow the same protocol, with their modern touch.

The announcement sent the world into a flurry of excitement. The London Eye flashed red, white and blue, and the BT Tower carried an illuminated announcement proclaiming “It’s a boy!”.

Canada celebrated by lighting up both Niagara Falls and Toronto’s CN Tower in blue. There were gun salutes at the Tower of London and Green Park, and the bells of Westminster Abbey rang out. Here is to hoping this time the world will be illuminated in pink, I say!

When they trio left the hospital on 23rd July, all anyone could talk about is how many times did Prince William practice clicking in the car seat. He looked like a pro, but he has said he only practised once. So, in my personal opinion, either that was a long practice or he needs to give some tips to my husband!

The following day, Prince William and Kate announced their precious son would be named George Alexander Louis, formally known as Prince George of Cambridge. Bookmakers everywhere took in bets on what would be the baby’s name. George and James topped the charts.

If you think you have an idea as to what Baby Cambridge number two’s name may be, take a part in Royal Central’s Baby Cambridge Competition.

Unlike Prince Philip or Prince Edward, who were not present at the birth of their children, William wanted to be with Kate every step of the way and spent the night at the hospital with her. First-time grandfather, Prince Charles however was 300 km away in Yorkshire. Prince Charles and Camilla celebrated in private with champagne and hurried back to London as soon as possible to meet his grandson. Kate’s parents were first to see George, and I am sure once again all grandparent’s will be on the edge to meet what may be their first granddaughter!

Only a few more weeks to go! What are you most looking forward to?
