The Duchess of Cornwall teases of “a royal story you may be unaware of”

Last night, the Duchess of Cornwall attended an event full of women from all corners of the globe at The Ned Hotel hosted by Women in Journalism (WIJ).

At the event, she praised the “bold and thriving” press and commented she could hear the “pencils sharpening” when she mentioned she would be sharing “a royal story you may be unaware of”.

Speaking of Anne Royall, the 18th Century American journalist, who according to the story, secured an interview with President John Quincy Adams on pensions for widows when she sat next to his clothing when he went skinning dipping in the river.

The Duchess added:”No one knows if this story is true or not, but I hope it is. I doubt it’s the best way to get an interview today, but it’s a marvellous measure of female guile.”

Camilla continued, saying: “A bold, thriving press is part of what makes Britain great, but it is vital that in stories from around the world we hear both male and female perspectives.

“Research by your own organisation shows that it is still not easy for women journalists, and in general stories about women are less likely to be told.

“We need to continue to take courage from great women of the past, but we also need to look to the future.

“I am privileged to meet many amazing women in my travels around the world, and I know how important it is that we hear their voices and their experiences.

“Thank you for helping us to make sure we record the great women of today so we can inspire the young women of tomorrow.”

Earlier in the day, Camilla accompanied Prince Charles down under London where they opened the National Grid’s London Power Tunnels Project.

Charles and Camilla pressed a button at the launch which officially opened the new 32km (20 miles) electricity superhighway which will supply electricity to London from deep below the capital’s streets.

It was as the couple jointly pressed the button that the famous 1990s song blasted out with the famous chorus ‘I’ve Got The Power.’
